They say you should record everything so I will record everything in my journal and every so often post it up here. Be looking for changes also to the page soon.

Happy lifting and remeber that only you can change your life for the better or for the worse. It is up to you to make those choices. Reflect and always seek guidance when you need it.

Thanks for following the ol musclehead.

From nothing to pro…..

Well 3 weeks in and body is starting to see the changes I want. Shoulder caps are starting to be rounder and separation is starting to come in also..

Been banging hard with the weights and cardio has been good. Meals are pretty good and have been roughly every 2.5 hours. Gotta get down under 260 so still got about 25 lbs before I am there.

Hope everyone is doing well in their goals. My blog will be used to track everything up to my first show in December.

Push beyond the norm

Everyone has limits be they physical, mental or psychological. When you begin life you are given a certain amount of gifts when it come to genetics. But there are those that push beyond their limits to achieve success that would have otherwise not come to them.

You have to be willing to put in the time and sacrifice to stretch beyond your limits and create whatever it is you want that turns into your success. Sometime that means you have to sacrifice a few luxurious items that you think you cannot live without. Most people like going to the gym and don’t get me wrong I know a few people that have good bodies that cause envy at the gym, but those folks also have good genetics and they waste them on being a bar rat and not a gym rat.

Not that this is bad, but imagine everything they could achieve if they did 10 or 15% more in the gym. I will admit my weakness is food. I have always adored great food. But for me to create the life I want now for my family it seems I will be sacrificing all the great food that Texas has to offer to squeeze out that extra 50% I know is there in my body.

Time to get serious. I have a show I want to win this fall and time to do ask Nike has always said “Just Do It!”. So goodbye to all my favorite foods and hello to my diet. Though I have done a reasonably good job following my diet I have been known to overdo it when it is cheat meal time.

Enjoy life folks, but imagine what could be if you pushed beyond your limits.

I will get back to doing more posts

Change of pace back workouts

Had someone ask me what my back workout consisted of. I alternate the workouts every week. One hits width and the other thickness.

Back – width emphasis

Warm-up:

Neutral-grip chin-ups 3 x failure

Wide-grip pulldowns 3 x 8-12

Barbell row 3 x 8-12

Hammer Strength row 3 x 8-12

Machine or cable pullover 7 x 8-15

Back – thickness emphasis

Warm-up:

Reverse-grip pulldowns 3 x 12-15

Low cable row or 1-arm dumbbell row 3 x 8-12

T-bar row 3 x 8-12

Deadlift 4 x 8-12

Hammer Strength row 7 x 8-12

Note: For either back workout, those needing to specialize on lower back development should add 3-4 sets of weighted hyperextensions

Musings

What makes a person a person. Is it how they are raised? Is it their environment? Is it something in their dna? My scientific wife would say dna, but I think it is something different. I think it is what is in their heart that makes a person.

The essences of a person is found in the single place that only they can control. Their heart is what breeds passion and want. When we are children we believe in everything and anything. As adults we see only the “reality” around us. We forget to see with our hearts. They say that the eyes are the gateway to the soul, but the heart is the keeper of that soul.

If you have forgotten what following what is in your heart then I beg you to quiet your mind and listen to the voice that comes from your heart and find what it is you were meant to be.

NFL Draft

Seeing as i closed down my draft blog a little while back I am adding in my draftnik blog here.  And without further wait here it is….

1.  Houston Texans– Jadeveon Clowney– With the 1st pick the Texans take the best available talent there is and that is truly Clowney.  You are going to team this dynamic end with the best DE in the game right now in JJ Watt.  Offenses need to prepare for this tandem!!!

2.  St. Louis Rams– Greg Robinson– They have need a LT that they can build around and the Jake Long experiment fell off the tracks last year and is not looking like he can recapture his old form.  Robinson provides a rare mixture of athleticism and strength.

3.  Jacksonville Jaguars– Teddy Bridgewater– Gives you a great center piece to a new offense that was lacking a QB a year ago.  He will certainly have low points in his rookie campaign, but also has the most polished game entering this years draft.

4. Cleveland Browns–Sammy Watkins– Though they need a QB badly they cannot pass up a talent like Watkins who can stretch the field as a good #2 to Josh Gordon.  Watkins gives you that dynamic.

5.  Oakland Raiders– Jake Matthews– The A&M tackle is a solid piece to start rebuilding around and gives current starter Matt Schuab a LT to protect his blindside.

6.  Atlanta Falcons– Khalil Mack– Mack is a hustler at OLB that will gives the Falcons a legitimate pass rusher and run stuffer.

7.  Tampa Bay– Taylor Lewan– The big tackle from Michigan did not fall far in the draft and will allow 2nd year QB Mike Glennon a little breathing room to continue to grow as an NFL QB.

8.  Minnesota Vikings– Aaron Donald– With the lose of Jared Allen to NFC rival Chicago Donald will add a much needed presence to the interior of the Vikings defense.

9.  Buffalo Bills–Eric Ebron– Ebron will give 2nd year QB Manuel a solid TE target to throw too when things breakdown.

10.  Detroit Lions– Justin Gilbert– Gilbert will gives the Lions a young CB that will help with a failing secondary.  When you have Marshall and Jefferies in your division any help in the secondary is a good thing.

11. Tennessee Titans — Anthony Barr– This is a good spot for the OLB from UCLA.  He is a dynamic pass rusher which the Titans have been lacking for a while now.

12.  New York Giants– Zack Martin– While a little high for my ND product Martin has proven to be a versatile lineman at ND and a stalwart at LT.  He will help remake the Giants Oline.

13. St. Louis Rams– Ha Ha Clinton-Dix– With a second pick in the top 15 the Rams add a great safety to their already loaded defense.  Clinton-Dix will be a difference maker for them ala Ed Reed in Baltimore.

14.  Chicago Bears–Louis Nix III– It was hard to pick who my beloved Bears would take, but with the way the offense played last year and how the defense showed its age it was easy to insert Nix into this spot.  He is a versatile nose/3 technique who will give the Bears a big man up front that will garner double teams due to his quickness and penetrating ability.

15.  Pittsburgh Steelers–C.J. Mosley– Adding a talent like Mosley to a defense that has fallen on hard times is a stroke of luck for the Steelers.  For years they made their name on defense with outstanding linebackers.  Mosley can play both inside and outside so will be able to be moved around if need be.

16.  Dallas Cowboys–Timmy Jernigan– I have to go DT here.  While a solid DE would have been nice to add you can not pass up a talent like Jernigan who will solidify the interior of your line at nose tackle.

17.  Baltimore Ravens–Mike Evans– Joe Flacco gets a big strong receiver to throw to finally.  Mike will pick up the slack that was created with Boldin left 2 years ago.

18.  New York Jets–Marquis Lee– It was either lee or Evans for the WRless Jets.  This will allow whoever becomes the starter a good WR to match up with Erik Decker.

19.  Miami Dolphins–Cyrus Kouandjio– Though they signed Brandon Albert to play LT they still need help at RT.  Kouandjio will give them youth on the line and when Albert finally leaves can switch over to LT.

20.  Arizona Cardinals–Dee Ford– A classic tweener that will add some youth to a very aged d-line.

21.  Green Bay Packers–Calvin Pryor– With a need in the secondary the Packers will go with the best available S in Pryor.

22.  Philadelphia Eagles–Darqueze Dennard– Since all the top tier safeties are off the board the Eagles opt for getting younger at CB.

23.  Kansas City Cheifs–Brandon Cooks– Cooks will make a great #2 next to Dwayne Bowe and be a nice new weapon for Alex Smith.

24.  Cincinnati Bengals–Kony Ealy– With most of the top tier d-lineman gone the Bengals grab the other Missouri DE that is not named Michael Sam.

25.  San Diego Chargers–Jason Verrett– With this pick I can see it being use don nothing but CB and Jason is a great late round pick that will add depth.

26.  Cleveland Browns–Zack Mettenberger- With their second pick of the 1st round the Browns address their QB need with selecting the LSU QB.  While still needing a bit more polish he is a pro style QB who has shown he can stand in the pocket and make the tough throws.

27.  New Orleans Saints– Bradley Roby– The Saints take one of the 2nd tier CB’s to help in Rex Ryan’s defense.

28.  Carolina Panthers– Kelvin Benjamin– While many thought he would go higher this is a perfect landing place for him.  he will get to prove he is a #1 now that Steve Smith is gone.

29.  New England Patriots–Jace Amaro– Jace will take over where the Gronk and former player Hernandez left off.  He will be a great safety valve for Brady.

30.  San Francisco 49ers–  Ra’Shede Hageman– He will provide depth to a d-line that has been a solid force in the NFL.

31.  Denver Broncos– Stephen Tuitt– A versatile DE he will add depth to the line and will make contributions when on the field.

32.  Seattle Seahawks–David Yankey– A versatile guard who will step into the lineup from day 1 and will be there for the next 10 years.

Some more resipes.

For all my Texas friends…

Tilapia with Bacon and Artichokes

Prep Time: 10 min
Cook Time: 10 min
Serves: 4

SHOPPING LIST
4 slices thick-cut bacon, chopped
4 tilapia fillets
Kosher salt and black pepper
1 (10-ounce) jar marinated artichoke hearts, drained and quartered
2 tablespoons diced roasted red peppers
Juice of ½ a lemon
1 tablespoon chopped flat-leaf parsley

Directions

1. PLACE bacon in a large sauce pan over medium-high heat and cook until crisp. Remove from pan and set aside, leaving bacon grease in the pan.

2. REDUCE heat to medium, generously season tilapia fillets with salt and pepper, and place in pan. Let fillets sear for 3 minutes without moving them.

4. Sprinkle with parsley before serving.

HELPFUL HINTS
Diced pancetta (Italian bacon) is even better than bacon in this recipe; though it can be a tough (and expensive) ingredient to find.

Time to get some stuff done…

While I was in the gym I started to think about all the things I have allowed to get in my way over the years when it came to my goals. I sacrificed my goals for a bunch other things because it was either expected of me to do so or people thought I was stupid for wanting certain things.

Well unfortunately I put what others wanted ahead of my own wants. Well that stops today. I have to say it is rather refreshing to be married to someone who actually acknowledges my wants and dreams. It is nice to have someone who wants to see me succeed in my endeavors.  Well it is time to finally get all of the voices out of my head that are not supposed to be there. The only voices that will be there are mine, Trish’s and as Eminem says the monsters under the bed.

Time to as Jay says to become selfish and concentrate on me and get me to where I want to be. With the help of some great people in my corner I will be extremely successful in reaching my goals. Well time to sleep and recover from my shoulder workout.

Keep lifting folks and stay strong.
